Condom Maker Has Dandy Idea for Novelty Candy
A Japanese condom maker has started producing novelty chocolates using the same expertise
it applies to rubber molds for making high-quality contraceptives.
But sales of the chocolates, in the shape of animals such as bears and squirrels as well
as traditional Japanese sumo wrestlers, have so far been disappointing, it says.
``Perhaps because of the unfortunate associations, people can't enjoy the chocolates,''
admitted a spokesman for Okamoto Industries Inc.
But he said the relatively high price of the chocolates, rather than other associations,
might be putting people off. Okamoto, which had sales of $655 million in the last business
year, exports its condoms to 37 countries, including the United States and China.
It came up with the idea of making novelty chocolates when it realized its rubber molds
could produce them more cheaply than the usual metal molds.
``Our objective in this is to sell the technology for rubber-made molds for products such
as chocolate and soap,'' the spokesman said.
