DIAPHRAGM and SPERMICIDAL JELLY
The diaphragm is a soft rubber dome-shaped device to place inside the vagina before intercourse to cover the cervix.  It forms a barrier preventing sperms from entering the uterus.  If properly used, the diaphragm will not be felt by the couple.  Occasionally, some women may have allergic reactions to rubber or the chemicals and those who use the diaphragm are high risk to bladder infections.
By pelvic examination, the doctor will determine the suitable size of diaphragm for the woman.  When using the diaphragm, spermicidal jelly is put on both sides of the rubber dome and around the rim (fig. 1).  The diaphragm is then inserted into the vagina using fingers or an inserter (fig 2 & 3) so that the cervix is covered.
It should not be removed until at least 6-8 hours after intercourse.  To well keep the diaphragm for next time's use, it should be washed, wiped dry and store in a clean container away from direct sunlight.  The size and fit of the diaphragm should be checked during an annual check-up.  After giving birth or after any pelvic surgery, the woman should return to the clinic for examination to see if a diaphragm of a different size is needed.
